Society and Membership Details

Since 1962, the Australian Society of World War One Aero Historians has provided a Sydney based forum for World War One aviation enthusiasts. The Society publishes an annual Journal and quarterly newsletters, and in addition it engages in a varied program of meetings, outings, talks, and other activities. Membership covers a wide cross-section of interests, including historical research, scale and flying modelling, book collecting, medals, memorabilia - and much more. Membership is by application and as an active historical society, we encourage members to contribute to our aims and activities. Our international component comprises a valued and growing group who benefit from the resources we are able to afford them.

The Society meets quarterly at the North Sydney Club, 88 Berry Street, North Sydney, Australia. The meetings are held in February, May, August and November, on the third Saturday of the month. Proceedings commence with a brief business meeting, followed by afternoon tea, and conclude with an entertainment segment. This may consist of a talk, video show, modelling exhibition, or any of a number of activities with a WW1 aviation theme.

PUBLICATIONS:

The Society's principal publication, which is airmailed to all overseas members, is The '14 -'18 Journal. Comprising some 100 pages, it is produced annually and contains a wide range of articles, interviews, illustrations, etc., prepared and submitted by members throughout the year. A project to reproduce out of print copies of our back Journals has recently been completed and these valuable research aids are now available for sale to members. Enquiries concerning the availability of back issue Journals should be directed in the first instance to the Journal Editor.

Quarterly Newsletters are mailed to Australian and air-mailed to international members, reporting current Society activities and topical information of interest to members. They also feature short articles, covering a range of WW1 aviation subjects, eg. historical items, book and magazine reviews, modelling hints and members' wants-and-swaps. An Out-of-Towners' Quiz offers valuable prizes to non-Sydney residents.

AUDIO LIBRARY:

From the Society's inception in 1962 until comparatively recent times, we carried out an extensive program of interviews with WW1 aviation veterans. These were recorded on audio tape and later written up in our Journals. Together with other audio tapes on aviation historical subjects, they have been collated and catalogued. They now form a useful research tool and are available for borrowing by both local and overseas members. Inquiries should be directed to the Society Librarian (Address in the Membership Directory).

CONTACTS AND OTHER BENEFITS:

On joining, each member receives a copy of the current Membership List and becomes eligible to receive all subsequent updates. Correspondence between members is encouraged and the Society maintains a computerised database from which, should they so wish, we can put members sharing the same interests in touch with each other.

RAFFLE SCHEME

The Society conducts Book and Kit raffles at its quarterly meetings, offering good quality prizes to participants. These are very popular, and some time ago the scheme was extended to include out-of-town members and those unable to attend meetings on a regular basis. All members are eligible to participate (at a considerable discount) in all four raffles on payment of a fee. For further details, see Annual membership Fees and Charges (below).
